GREETINGSGreetings from the President
Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, with the motto "Know the Ocean, Protect the Ocean, Use the Ocean," is conducting basic and applied education and research in marine-related studies and science and technology to contribute to the sustainable development of human society. At our university, this motto is translated into 188体育app官网_188体育投注 as "Voices from the Ocean."
What kind of "voices" do you hear from the ocean? Many different people live all over the world and are involved with the ocean in many different ways. Therefore, the "voices" we hear from the ocean are likely to be diverse. Some people may hear the gentle song of Mother Ocean, brimming with life. Others may hear the painful cries of those suffering from environmental destruction. When you feel like responding to the "voices" from the ocean, our university, the only maritime university in Japan, would like to be a strong support for you.
Starting in the 2024 academic year, our university has implemented a four-semester system with 105-minute classes university-wide. After roughly two years of reviewing the curriculum and timetable, and meticulous preparation by many faculty and staff, we were able to successfully launch the system. This reform has enabled us to extend the summer vacation period, enhance off-campus learning opportunities (study abroad, mid- to long-term internships, etc.), and introduce a variety of classes, such as active learning using the expanded class time.
Regarding the development of global human resources, we have launched the "Japan-Nordic Collaborative International Education Program for Training Advanced Specialist Engineers Who Will Create the Future of the Oceans" (commonly known as the METIS Program). This program was adopted for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's "Strengthening the Global Expansion of Universities Project - Supporting the Formation of Inter-University Exchanges with EU Countries, etc." in fiscal year 2024, and together with Nordic universities, we are implementing an educational program aimed at improving and revitalizing the marine industry's productivity and resolving global issues surrounding the oceans.
In terms of AI and data science education, the "Marine Industry AI Professional Development Graduate Program" cultivates human resources who can accurately implement AI technology in society based on specialized knowledge of the ocean, maritime affairs, and fisheries and extensive field experience. Furthermore, the Marine Entrepreneurship Training Program offers "Marine Entrepreneurship I and II" as undergraduate courses, "Marine Entrepreneurship Seminar" as a master's course, and "Special Course in Marine Entrepreneurship" as a doctoral course, with the aim of cultivating human resources who can approach social issues related to the ocean and take on the role of starting businesses and launching new projects within companies.
In the research field, the Strategic Management Organization for Marine Research (commonly known as MS-Square) is at the center of the "New Area/Core Research Creation Project," which aims to strategically lead research in the marine field.
In the area of ??management and operation, we are implementing campus restructuring projects, including the construction of a new international mixed dormitory, in line with the Campus Master Plan 2022 and measures to increase our own income through effective land utilization.
Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology hopes to continue to provide society with robust individuals who will acquire cutting-edge marine science and technology and carve out the future of the oceans from a global perspective.
